About the AEOM 2024

Welcome to the 31th conference of the association in the Hungarian Open Air Museum between 19-22. August 2024.
‘23 / 12 / 07

The topic of the conference: ‘Representations of and reflections on traumas in open air museums’

The last decades have seen historic traumas and social challenges – wars, resettlement of social groups, (mis)treatment of minorities, migration, gender issues, reintegration of peripheral social groups, intergenerational challenges – in several societies.

As museums, more specifically, as open air institutions, what are our possibilities? And what is our social responsibility towards our source community and audience? What means do we have for the museum representation?

The next conference of AEOM aims to map the theoretical background, the good practices and case studies concerning these topics in an open air museum context. All topics are subdivided into the categories of research, acquisition, museum representation (exhibitions of different kinds) and knowledge transfer.

AEOM also plans to compile an action plan of sustainability in the open air museums, together with an open air museum definition and a code of ethics. The results of these efforts are to be presented during the 2024 AEOM conference.
