Skanzen for Kids
Skanzen is a memorable experience for children, where they can learn and develop by playing. They can meet the mystical figures of the Fairy-Tale Playground, harvest the crop in the Children’s Farm, and discover the secrets of wood as a plant and raw material in the House of Wood. At the Post Office, they can try out the duties of a turn-of-the-century postal clerk.
Magic Barn
Region VIII: Bakony-Balaton Uplands – House from Szentgál
A world of wonder awaits our visitors in the Szentgál barn. The room is filled with objects magnified ten times their actual size, depicting items found on a set peasant table, such as a milk jug, bread, and sausage. Behind the hinged doors of these giant objects lies the essence: the process of producing the food depicted.
Open: daily during peak season in museum hours
Kid's Farm
Region VII: Southern Transdanubia – House from Csököly
What was life like on the farm? What was it like to milk cows, feed the animals, and plant beets? It’s hard to imagine this in our city life, but we’d love to try it. Here, the kids can play at being farmers and farmwives. In this exhibition area designed exclusively for children, the little ones can try out every imaginable, desired, and dreamed-of activity related to farm animal husbandry and crop cultivation in a safe environment.
Open: daily during peak season in museum hours.
Boundary Markers
Location: Next to the Upper Tisza Region exhibition unit (III), across from Kisrét
Where is the boundary?! Walk around the various elements of the outdoor exhibition, arranged in a spiral. You can learn about the structures, objects, tools, and customary practices that mark the boundaries of social, communal, and individual living spaces. Boundaries separate areas; their primary purpose is protection, but they are present not only physically but also at the turning points of our lives.
Interactive Rest Areas
Three interactive areas await weary visitors within the open air museum.
Spanning nearly 80 hectares – a vast area that’s almost impossible to explore in a single day – this colorful space, which, together with Transylvania, now forms a “80-hectare museum park,” offers three distinct areas designed to inspire play and reflection, providing opportunities to rest, enjoy a snack, and quench your thirst. Here, families and groups also have the opportunity for active rejuvenation that highlights the distinctive features of the region.
At the Millstone Rest Area (Region VI: Great Hungarrian Plain Market Town), next to the colorful wheeled well, grain sacks serve as seats around a millstone table, inviting visitors to sit beneath the shady trees of the “Itsy-bitsy Little Forest.” It looks as though those waiting to have their grain ground have set them down while they wait their turn at the mill.
The „Szuszékos” Rest Area (Region VII: Southern Transdanubia) is a large red structure peeking out from among the bushes. The wind chimes on the sky-high ladder send a shiver down your spine.
The Belfry Rest Area (Region III: Upper Tisza) is located on the banks of the stream. Beneath the red church roof glimmering among the trees, visitors seeking peace can find spiritual tranquility. The viza (a type of sturgeon), a fish species now almost unknown, lived in our waters for centuries, so weary travelers can settle down here at a table shaped like a viza.
Game Yard
Region III: Upper Tisza – House from Uszka
Target throwing, stilt walking, swamp walking. If you’d like to see what children played with and how they played 100 years ago, visit the Game Yard. You can throw corn husks at a target, defeat the dragon with a sock ball, roll hoops, and try out many other games. In the Baby Room, the little ones can play with a small kitchen, dolls, and building blocks.
Open: daily during peak season in museum hours. The Baby Room is open from May through the end of September.
Little Shop
Region II: Upland Market Town – House from Tokaj
Near Mózes Klein’s grocery store, you’ll find the children’s grocery store, the Little Shop. At Mózes Klein’s, you can marvel at how different a store used to be, back when a shopkeeper served customers from behind the counter. Here, children can touch the merchandise, rearrange it, try out the cash register, and even weigh items. Come and play shopkeeper!
Open: daily during peak season, in museum hours.
Bird-Friendly Garden
Next to the Upper Tisza Region (III) exhibition unit, on the banks of the Sztaravoda Stream
At the rest area along the Sztaravoda Stream, we planted vegetation and installed nesting boxes, feeders, waterers, and woodpiles with the help of the Hungarian Ornithological Society, all of which attract various bird species. If you’re lucky, you too can spot different birds, and the signs posted there will help you identify them.
Fairy Tale Playground
Region VIII: Bakony, Balaton Uplands
Hungarian folk tales come to life at the Skanzen, such as The Little Ball, The Roosters of Ireg, The Truth-Telling Góbé, and The Little Pig and the Wolves. Among the toys are a swing that moves the characters from The Little Ball, a fish-shaped slide, a merry-go-round with a flywheel, a rooster-shaped climbing pole, and a squirrel wheel that makes the little pig dance. The stories can not only be relived again and again through the toys, but can also be read on-site – so parents and children alike can greet the colorful characters as old friends, even if they are encountering the folk tale for the first time here.
Sports Field
Kisrét – in front of the Upper Tisza Region (III) exhibition unit
In addition to viewing the exhibitions, we also offer opportunities for active recreation and outdoor activities. At the sports field, you can not only relax under the shade of the trees, but also play badminton, tag, or ball games.
