Skanzen Train

The Skanzen Train is not only a comfortable mode of transportation but also a unique journey through time, making a visit to the museum and memorable experience for people of all ages.

Time Travel on the Skanzen Train

That’s why you should try the Skanzen Train!

“Do you have a train ticket?” – we ask visitors as they enter the Skanzen gates, and for good reason! The train that runs through the museum grounds is much more than just a means of transportation. The 2.2-kilometer-long railway line is considered a rarity even on an international scale: Europe’s longest standard-gauge museum railway line awaits passengers. The train ride not only makes it easier to explore the nearly 80-hectare grounds but also offers a unique experience that can make the visit memorable for visitors of all ages.

In addition to the train station, which also serves as the entrance building, there are five other stops, all of which are accessible to guests in wheelchairs and with prams.

When you board the train, you’ll find yourself on a real journey through time!

In fact, even while waiting on the platform, a piece of the old world welcomes arrivals, as the staff – the engineer and the conductor – await passengers in period uniforms. While you wait for the train to arrive, it’s worth stopping by the Resti (Railway Restaurant): over a cup of coffee and a selection of retro treats, it’s easy to get in the mood for the journey. Then, with its characteristic clatter, the train – built in the 1930s – rolls in, evoking the atmosphere of journeys from days gone by at first glance. Once everyone has taken their seats, the familiar train whistle sounds, the train begins to roll slowly, and the journey begins – an experience at least as enjoyable as the destination itself.

It’s not just kids who enjoy riding the train!

Anyone who’s been to Skanzen knows that genuine smiles, sparkling eyes, chocolate-smeared faces, and little hands waving are almost always a common sight from the windows of the Skanzen train. So, if you’re visiting with young children, a train ride is practically a must-do activity. However, the train isn’t just a favorite among the little ones – comfortably exploring the vast grounds can be a special experience for people of all ages.

A Date in the Past

If you’d like to spend a pleasant day with your partner at Skanzen, a leisurely train ride that evokes the past can create a truly special atmosphere. The train can also transport passengers back to the human stories and romances that the museum’s gates still preserve today.

For the Young at Heart

For groups of retirees or friends, a train ride can be a delightful trip down memory lane. During the journey, they can reminisce about childhood train trips, old pranks, or even those slower, carefree times when the journey itself was a major event.

For Those Looking to Slow Down

Amid a fast-paced world, rapid stimuli, tight deadlines, and countless chores at home, taking things down a notch can feel especially good. The Skanzen train offers the perfect opportunity for this, as you can explore the historic farmsteads hidden across nearly 80 hectares at a comfortable, leisurely pace.

For Train Enthusiasts

If you’ve been passionate about locomotives and railway stories since childhood, you can’t miss the Skanzen train. The Ganz–Jendrassik BCmot 422 motor train is not just a spectacular museum piece, but also a true journey back in time into the world of Hungarian railway history.
