Easter Festival 2025
Easter Festival at the Skanzen, April 20-21, 2025.
On Easter Sunday and Monday, the Szentendre Open Air Ethnographic Museum, known as the Skanzen, brings to life the old village Easter celebrations with sprinkling, painted eggs, and a spring-welcoming festivity. The traditions associated with Christian culture and spring folk customs appear in the courtyards. Visitors can expect stories, concerts, and crafts. On Easter Monday, the Kaláka ensemble will be there, along with Ági Szalóki's Band and many others.
In addition to the religious holiday, the period leading up to Easter is also a time for welcoming spring and spring renewal, which is associated with many beliefs and folk customs. During Holy Week leading up to Easter, the courtyards were tidied up, and the houses were cleaned so they could participate in church ceremonies from Maundy Thursday onwards. The Lajta Folk Dance Ensemble dancers from Mosonmagyaróvár will recreate the atmosphere of Easter sprinkling and spring festivities at the Skanzen. Szende Csernik and László Gulyás will tell Easter stories and tales during the stage programs. Tímár Sára's Band, Bognár Szilvia and Csernók Klára's Band will give concerts on Easter Sunday. The BaHorka Ensemble and the Berka Band will also be there. A craft fair and stilt walker performances will add colour to the programs.
The focus of the craft activities is the painted egg. Visitors can try their hand at egg-writing, leaf-printing, and admire the intricately crafted horseshoe-decorated eggs. They can learn about Gyimes, Carpathian, Bulgarian, and Hutsul egg-decorating motifs and make wool lambs, chicks, and Easter decorations. There will be an Easter treasure hunt, an Easter playground, a stamp-collecting game, and a fragrant water demonstration. Those interested can also participate in sacred programs: on Sunday, a Catholic Mass will be held in the Óbudavár Catholic Church, and on Monday, a Reformed service will be held in the Mánd Reformed Church, and visitors can tour the Skanzen churches during a church tour.
During spring break — from April 17th to 27th — the museum is preparing a spring-themed week, during which post-Easter customs will be featured in addition to Easter preparations.
