The tree was cut down in the forest at night by the lads and set up at dawn in front of each girls' house together, or each lad in front of his sweetheart's house, according to local custom. In many places, a single tall maypole was erected only in front of the judge's house, the priest's house or the church, and smaller trees were placed in the courtyards of the girls' houses. The maypoles were decorated with ribbons, handkerchiefs, flowers, full bottles of wine, etc., before being buried in the ground or nailed to the gatepost or the well-pole.

The custom of sending May baskets became widespread between the two world wars. In northern Hungary, they were given to girls who were close to marriage or already engaged. It was customary to fill the baskets with potted flowers (hydrangeas, geraniums) and cut flowers (roses), and they were typically decorated with ribbons. But scarves, sweets, and even rings could also be included as gifts. They were usually given in the evening when the maypole was erected, or on the afternoon of May 1st. They were placed in windows, at gates, or on the maypole; the customs of giving and receiving varied from town to town.
