The exhibition that most comprehensively conveys the message of the “Green Skanzen” theme opened in the Granary building of the Hungarian Open Air Museum under the title Together for Sustainability! The exhibition is remarkable not only for its relevance but also for the way it was prepared: 17 curators worked together to develop it, linking each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals defined by the UN to a solution that was a natural part of everyday life in peasant culture.
Among other things, the exhibition showcases zero-waste households, water conservation, the use of locally sourced materials, and the practice of repairing and reusing objects. Visitors can thus take home practical ideas that they can apply immediately in their own lives.
The richness of ethnographic knowledge and the diversity of the Skanzen’s exhibitions are demonstrated by the fact that an exhibition guide has been created for each sustainability goal. These guides lead visitors through the museum’s 80-hectare grounds to different landscape zones, where they can learn more about the details of each topic. This allows guests to explore the museum on self-guided, themed walks.
The exhibition also highlights museum best practices and active programs – such as the Dementia Program, the community garden, and the integrated camps for disabled children – which reinforce the social dimension of sustainability.
